Rules by State

The limits are different for every state. For example:
In Michigan small claims court the maximum limit is only $1,750. In Arizona and Massachusetts small claims court you can go up to $2,500. Illinois small claims court allows up to $5,000. In Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia small claims court the limit is $15,000 (complete list below).

Small Claims Court is a state court that tries civil cases and not criminal cases. Cases usually involve collecting money. You can sue for Property Damage, Contract Disputes, Personal Injury, Warranty problems, Defective products and Violation of Consumer Protection Laws. You can't sue in criminal cases and you can't sue for a divorce in Small Claims Court."
